82nd Street over the White River | Bridge Rehabilitation
INDIANAPOLIS, IN—Also known as Marion County Bridge No. 0501F, BLN inspected and designed the rehabilitation of this historic structure carrying 82nd Street over the White River. A detailed truss member inspection, deck sounding and a detailed load rating of the truss members, stringers and floor beams was completed to determine the extent of the rehabilitation required.
The 4-span steel truss bridge is 550 feet long. The existing bottom lateral bracing was heavily rusted and several had rusted through and dropped. The lateral bracing was removed and replaced. Some truss members had been damaged by collision and required heat straightening. The existing paint system for the trusses contained lead based paint, therefore remediation was required to clean and repaint the structure. The deck sounding was accomplished at the same time as the truss member inspection.
The rehabilitation included replacement of the deck, replacement of the deck joints, new barrier railing and transitions, approach slab replacement, truss member repairs, and cleaning, environmental control and painting of the steel superstructure. Several floor beams did not rate out to an HS20 loading and therefore required additional strengthening. Repair of deteriorated portions of the bridge seats for the abutments was also completed.
Additional BLN Services
The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places during the plan development and required BLN to coordinate with FHWA, SHPO, and other consulting parties to determine if the project was considered an adverse or non-adverse affect. BLN worked with DPW, INDOT, FHWA, and SHPO to provide an accelerated plan for approval of the Section 106 and environmental documents.
