Newton County Bridge No. 57 | Bridge Rehabilitation
NEWTON COUNTY, IN—The Newton County Bridge No. 57 Rehabilitation project involved repairing an existing, historic, steel truss bridge.
The existing bridge has a 17' clear roadway width. After the repairs were completed, the bridge has a 1614'-1" clear roadway width.
The repairs included replacing the bottom struts and lateral bracing, replacing portions of the upper and lower chords and diagonals, replacing the truss bearings, replacing the existing floor beams and stringers, replacing the existing bridge railings, and removing the existing timber deck and installing a new treated laminated timber deck. To keep the historic nature of this structure, existing rivets were replaced with new rivets of like size. Other repairs included removing and replacing portions of the concrete wingwalls, mudwalls, and bridge seats.

Other incidental work included the installation of guardrail at all four corners of the bridge and wedging up the approach roadways to match the new bridge deck.
